This recipe is so good! The sauce tastes JUST like a restaurant version of orange chicken. It is so easy to make, and much healthier. You do need to find some specific asian ingredients, hopefully you can find them in the asian aisle at your local grocery store (but if not, you may need to go to an International grocery store, or buy on amazon). I use the air fryer to make the process go faster, but you can use the oven if you don't have an air fryer and just about double the time. (about 20 minutes on each side instead of 10--watch it closely). Make sure to cook some rice and veggies to turn this into a meal. Or leave it as is for an appetizer. To make the chickpea and rice flour you can use a high speed blender to blend dried rice and dried chickpeas until it becomes flour. You can sub all purpose flour if needed--but it ends up a little more soggy.
Ingredients
1medium head cauliflower, cut into small florets
1 tablespoon soy sauce to marinate, plus 2 tablespoons for sauce
dash of black pepper
1 tablespoon sweet chili sauce
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons tablespoon vegetarian oyster sauce
1 teaspoon hoisin sauce
Fresh juice from 1 orange
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon corn starch
1/2 cup chickpea flour
1/2 cup rice flour
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 teaspoons chopped ginger
Sesame seeds
Serve with rice and veggies
Instructions
1. Combine cauliflower florets with 1 tablespoon soy sauce in a mixing bowl and let it marinate while you mix the other ingredients together.
2.Combine remaining 2 tbsp soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, sugar, vegetarian oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, orange juice, rice vinegar and corn starch in a mixing bowl. Set aside.
3.Preheat air fryer or oven to 400 degrees.
4. Whisk chickpea flour, rice flour, pinch of salt and pepper in a mixing bowl. Pour 3/4 cup ice cold water into dry mixture and whisk until there’s no clumps.
5. Coat the florets with batter and place in the air fryer for 20 minutes (or oven for about 40 mins) flipping half way.
6. Heat a large pan over high heat, water saute garlic and ginger. Stir fry until you can smell aroma, about 30 seconds. Pour sauce mixture into pan, stir and boil for 1 minute.
7. Toss in cooked cauliflower florets quickly then remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds. Serve with rice and veggies or keep it as is for an appetizer. Enjoy!
